Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour (500g)
- 2 tablespoons baking powder
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 12 tablespoons unsalted butter, very cold
- 1 1/2 cups whole milk (354ml) – buttermilk or 2% milk can also be used
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C).
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
- Cut the cold butter into small pieces and add it to the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Slowly pour in the milk, stirring gently until the dough begins to come together.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Gently fold it over a few times to create layers, then roll it out to about 1-inch thickness.
- Use a biscuit cutter or a drinking glass to cut out biscuits.
- Place the biscuits on a baking sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and enjoy warm!
Notes
- For extra flaky biscuits, be sure to use cold butter and handle the dough gently.
- You can freeze the biscuits before baking. Just pop them into the oven directly from the freezer, adding an extra few minutes to the baking time.
- Experiment with adding herbs or cheese to customize the flavor!
